Athletics coaches dare minister over alleged plan to impose Americans on team

Image
Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung Team Nigeria’s hope of making an impact in the track and field event at the Rio Olympics Games may be hanging in the balance. Reason: an alleged ‘cold war’ is said to be brewing between some top Nigerian athletics coaches and the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, over an alleged attempt to impose two American coaches, Angie Taylor and Eric Campbell, on the Olympics team. Taylor and Campbell are among four athletics coaches on the payroll of the sports ministry in Abuja since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. While Taylor is said to be on a monthly take home of $12,000, Campbell is said to be receiving $10,000. The duo were employed by former Sports Minster, Bolaji Abdullahi, shortly before London 2012 Olympics Games. Some of the coaches who spoke with The Guardian yesterday at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, during the annual Pastor D.K Olukoya’s U-20 Athletics Championship, alleged that the minister wants to ‘i...

Value of electronic transactions hit N48.9tr in Nigeria

Image
Study identifies barriers limiting further growth Although, it is still plagued by inadequate levels of awareness, poor banking culture, lack of trust and a love for the status quo, the value of e-transactions recorded in 2015 hit N48.93 trillion, up by 11.6 per cent from 2014 in Nigeria. This disclosure was contained in a White Paper report titled “Africa on the Verge (AoV) Convergence Series”, put together by AfricaPractice, a strategy and communications consultancy firm, with offices in Nigeria and abroad. A copy was made available to The Guardian. The report, which observed that the establishment of the e-commerce industry has taken place as the wider digital value chain has expanded, with the availability and efficiency of e-payments becoming a crucial load bearing segment, observed that based on the significant link between the e-commerce and e-payments sectors, an adoption of similar advocacy methods supported by favourable government policies could help customers feel pr...

Image
• Lawmakers bemoan absence of policies to cushion hardship • Nigeria’s recession inevitable, say experts With the spectre of recession hanging over the nation, the Senate is deeply worried. Taking into cognisance the shrinking economy underscored by rising inflation, unemployment, poverty, dwindling oil revenue and other symptoms of recession, the upper legislative chamber yesterday summoned the Finance Minister, Mrs., and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele. The senators want the duo to brief the upper legislative chamber on the monetary and fiscal policies adopted to salvage the worrisome economic situation. Adopting without debate, a motion sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, Bassey Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa Ibom), the chamber expressed concern about revelations from several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that have roles to play in the economy regarding the gloomy picture of the nation’s economic condition. Scientists infect mosquitoes with bacteria to stop Zika, Dengue viruses

Image
• Biotech firm seeks approval to market product as pesticide to prevent spread of diseases • Warmer temperatures quickens spread of cholera as risk identified in procedure for ‘three-parent babies’ The United States (U.S.) could soon become the first country to approve the commercial use of a common bacterium to fight the spread of mosquitoes that can transmit viruses such as Zika, dengue and Chikungunya. According to a report published in Nature, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reviewing an application from the biotechnology start-up MosquitoMate to use the bacterium Wolbachia pipientis as a tool against the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus). The company plans to market Wolbachia as a pesticide — one that kills only mosquitoes, and leaves other insects untouched. The EPA’s decision on the matter will come after a public-comment period that ends on May 31. MosquitoMate’s strategy involves rearing mosquitoes infected with a particular strain of Wolbach...

One freed Chibok girl still cause for shame, not celebration

Image
The fact that one Chibok girl basically rescued herself last week shouldn’t make any of us feel better. The family of Amina Ali Nkeki has a reason to celebrate. The rest of the world does not. The response from the Nigerian government and the Obama administration to one abducted Chibok girl’s escape last week is symptomatic of a larger issue. Real action – not just posturing and attention seeking – is needed to rescue these girls, now missing for more than two years. I was hardly surprised to see the Nigerian government immediately attempting to celebrate (and take credit for) the purported rescue of a second Chibok girl just days after Amina’s escape – the second girl, it turned out, was not actually among those taken in the mass kidnapping in 2014. After all, the Nigerian government has been more preoccupied with securing positive international impressions than they have been about securing freedom for the Chibok girls. Now more than ever, we need to refocus attention on Ami...

Getty Getty Getty "Demi Lovato continues to be a fearless ally for LGBT equality and acceptance," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a press release after Lovato's performance.
