A defeat to ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire in the 2001/2002 CAF Champions League season proved to be the turning point in the history of the seven-time league champions Enyimba FC.
Following the defeat, governor of the state at the time, Orji Uzor Kalu, moved to address the dreadful situation of what used to be a substandard playing pitch in the Enyimba International Stadium, a 25,000 capacity stadium equipped with floodlights, and covered seats.
Kalu then proceeded to ensure generous funding for the local team and appointed Felix Anyansi Agwu as the new chairman of the club.
This appointment and rehabilitation soon returned results as the People’s Elephant went on to win seven League titles, two CAF Champions league titles, two African Super cups, four Nigerian FA cups and four Nigerian Super cups, all in the space of 14 years.
This feat by the People’s Elephant has seen them become the most successful football club in Nigeria.
However, 14 years on, the sorry state of the pitch and the outer wall of the Enyimba International Stadium have continued to raise eyebrows among football lovers and sports enthusiasts in the country.
Despite a unique design of covered seats, the maintenance of Enyimba International stadium has left many wondering why a club with revenue of around N2 billion, one of the richest sports clubs in Africa, has a stadium in such a dreadful state.

Enyimba wrapped up the League title with a game to spare after a 0-0 draw against title contenders Warri Wolves in Aba. The People’s Elephants garnered 69 points after 37 rounds of League matches played.
They have now won the NPFL title in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2015. They were African Champions in 2003 and 2004.
