Real Madrid Involved In Another Messy Affair With Spanish FA
Real Madrid have embarrassingly been kicked out of this season’s Copa Del Rey by the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) competition committee judge, Francisco Rubio Sanchez.
Real Madrid were expelled from the competition because they fielded an ineligible player in Dennis Cheryshev in a 3 – 1 win over third-tier side Cadiz.
The winger received a three yellow cards in last season’s competition while on-loan at Villareal which automatically translates to a one-match ban. Madrid however claimed they did not receive any fax regarding his suspension.
The capital club have however been expelled from this season’s competition and fined 6,001 euros (£4,300).
Real Madrid last won the competition in 2014 when they defeated Barcelona 2 – 1 in a highly entertaining final. Barcelona won the trophy in 2015.
Real Madrid said in a statement: “The competition judge acknowledges that Cheryshev was not personally notified about his ban.
“Real Madrid CF can verify the acknowledgement that the Spanish Football Federation did not personally notify Cheryshev about his ban, which is the only way the ban can take effect.
“We at Real Madrid CF stand by our argument and will take the appropriate action to ensure that the final outcome is favourable for the club.”
According to Marca Real will appeal to the RFEF and, if necessary, the country’s sport court, TAD.
Cheryshev, 24, was substituted just after half-time and coach Rafael Benitez said he was immediately removved after the error was noted to “show good faith”.
Cheryshev scored the opening goal in the 3 – 1 over Cadiz.
